A SNP (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism, pronounced "snip") is a single-letter variation in your DNA at a specific position in the genome. Think of your genome as a 3-billion-letter instruction manual — a SNP is where your copy has a different letter than most people. Out of ~10 million known SNPs, consumer genotyping chips like 23andMe test around 600,000. These small differences can influence traits like eye color, disease risk, and how you respond to medications.

Your genotype at any given SNP is the pair of DNA letters (alleles) you carry — one inherited from each parent. For example, if a SNP has variants A and G, your genotype might be AA (homozygous A), AG (heterozygous), or GG (homozygous G). Each combination can have different effects on traits or health risk. We analyze your specific genotype and match it against research databases to give you personalized interpretations.

A Polygenic Risk Score (PRS) combines the effects of many genetic variants to estimate your predisposition for a specific condition. Unlike single-gene tests, PRS considers dozens or hundreds of small-effect variants together, weighting each by its research-established effect size. Your raw score is then compared against a population distribution to give you a percentile ranking — telling you where you fall relative to others.

Pharmacogenomics studies how your genes affect your response to medications. Genes like CYP2C19 and CYP2C9 encode enzymes that metabolize drugs in your liver. Variants in these genes can make you a "poor metabolizer" (drugs build up, higher side-effect risk), "normal metabolizer," or "ultra-rapid metabolizer" (drugs clear too fast, reduced efficacy). This information can help you and your doctor make better medication decisions.

Your raw genome file is never uploaded to our servers, stored in a database, or shared with any third party. Your data stays in your browser only — clear it anytime from your dashboard. Nothing is stored on our servers. The only network requests made are to the AI assistant (Claude) when you choose to ask questions, and even then, only variant summaries are sent — never your raw genome file.

We support 23andMe and AncestryDNA raw data export files in .txt, .csv, and .tsv formats. To download yours: go to 23andMe.com → Settings → 23andMe Data → Download Raw Data, or AncestryDNA → Settings → Download Raw DNA Data. The file contains your genotyped SNPs with rsID identifiers, chromosome positions, and your genotype calls. Every SNP in our catalog is curated from studies with established statistical significance. However, genetic associations are probabilistic — they indicate tendencies and predispositions, not certainties. Environmental factors, lifestyle, and epigenetics all play important roles. Always discuss genetic findings with a qualified healthcare professional before making medical decisions.

Risk levels (low, average, elevated, high) represent where your genetic predisposition falls relative to the general population based on published research. "Elevated" means your genetic variants are statistically associated with a higher probability — it does not mean you will develop a condition. Many people with elevated genetic risk never develop the condition, and many people with low genetic risk do. Genetics is one factor among many.
